Welcome to Playback, a multi-media website where researchers can share works of criticism and scholarship regarding audio-visual culture. We are excited to bring you fresh, insightful posts each week, as well as additional content. This blog is devoted to timely criticism and new perspectives on our current media and cultural climate. Readers can also expect interviews with scholars and creators, reviews and commentary on film, television, and video games, as well as analysis of cultural and technological news and events.
Some of you may be familiar with Antenna, the UW-Madison media and cultural studies blog that ran from November 2009 to January 2016. Playback hopes to continue that site’s lead in providing a venue for careful analysis of media, news and events from popular culture. But we also want to be a space where scholars can experiment with other forms, from podcasting and video essays to interactive works and games. You can expect these projects in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, you can follow us on Twitter @playbackUW, and expect new posts every Tuesday and Friday. As with Antenna before, we encourage you to share your feelings on the post in the comments section and on social media. More than simply a blog, Playback is a forum for informed and critical discussion.
