Olivia Riley created this video essay for a course on gender and media. The content of the video provides an academic primer on the fan concept of “queerbaiting,” but the structure of the video can also serve as a useful pedagogical tool for future student work studying visual media. Particularly, the video essay format in general excels at conveying complex topics in digestible terms for a general audience. Additionally, the process of creating such an essay combines argumentation with technical skills, giving students an opportunity to work with both ideas and software to create their final project. This video can then hopefully serve as a model for teachers and students interested in pursuing related kinds of academic videographic production.
